This is a unit of work about the characteristics of soil and the important role soil plays in supporting life on Earth. The unit is divided into seven activity sequences that explore the definition of soil; the characteristics of soil types; the effects of soil nutrients on plant growth; and the role of ground cover in preventing erosion and improving water management. The unit provides a variety of hands-on experiments that are easily implemented in classroom settings. The unit’s activities are supported by background information and online support resources for teachers, detailed tasks for students, and links to videos and websites.

Educational value
  • This is a practical and useful unit for science in the primary years. It is of value for the Year 6 science curriculum content description on the interconnectedness of living and non-living things in the environment and how this is effected by physical conditions.
  • The hands-on activity focus of the unit provides highly valuable opportunties to build students' scientific inquiry skills through group investigations and it provides many opportunities for students to ask questions and clarify their thinking.
